After the hail storm: tips and warnings for consumers

People are cleaning up after Wednesday night's storm, and consumer reporter Steve Noviello said North Texans should beware of missteps and misinformed contractors.

Hail overnight left parked cars with pock marks and busted out back windows. Insurance adjusters say people shouldn’t let the damage get any worse by committing to the wrong contractor – especially those who approach you.

Temporary repairs to prevent more problems are ok, but otherwise sit tight, take photos and keep invoices and estimates. Don't go much beyond that, expert say.

“We don't want them to commit to something that may or may not be covered,” said Jared Howerton, State Farm representative.

Adjustors may see additional damage you're covered for, but your repairs covered up.

When it does come time to hire don't pay up front or pay in cash and always look for a local business or worker.

“We say local is better. If you have any issues moving forward, it's best to have someone local you can get in touch with,” Howerton said.

For home repairs, three estimates is customary to make sure you're getting a good job at a good price.
