Community mourning with Fort Worth Police Department over officer's shooting death

The men accused of shooting and killing Fort Worth Police Officer Garrett Hull will likely face capital murder charges.

A service was held Saturday in front of the Fort Worth Police Department, full of officers and their families.

Officer Hull was part of a team trailing three men, suspected in 17 bar robberies, late Thursday. Police say at least 10 people were in a bar when the suspects went to strike again. Patrons ran out and there was a gunfire as police moved in.

Officer Hull, a 40-year-old husband and father of two children, was shot in the head. He fought for more than a day, but died late Friday night, with his family by his side.

The news sent ripples through the community, as well as the police department. 

Debbie Baker brought therapy dogs to the prayer gathering. 

“It makes you cry because you feel like you're one of them because they do so much for the community and they get a bad name sometimes,” she said.

“It’s going to be very hard over this next week as we make plans and preparations to lay our brother to rest, but have heart to know that he is with god and that he will always be remembered,” said Deputy Chief Charlie Ramirez.

Suspects Samuel Mayfield and Timothy Huff face a long list of charges. The third suspect, Dacion Steptoe, was killed in the shootout.

The memorial remains outside the Fort Worth Police Department at 505 W. Felix St. for anyone who wishes to stop by and leave flowers or write a note.

So far, no plans have been announced regarding funeral or visitation services.
