Colleyville 16-year-old arrested for bringing gun to school

A letter went home with parents after a 16-year-old student was arrested at Colleyville Heritage High School for bringing a caliber handgun to school.

Although the gun was unloaded, police found bullets in the student’s backpack. The teen was taken into custody Thursday afternoon and is facing a felony charge.

The incident happened around 2:42 p.m. during fourth period. School officials got word from another student that a 16-year-old had a gun. The school resource officer and the principal confronted the student, checked his backpack and found a 45-caliber Remington semi-automatic handgun.

While investigators couldn't say why the teen brought the gun to school, they did say at no time did he make any threats. Police say the weapon apparently belonged to a family member.

"Fortunately, another student knew about it and reported it,” said Grandparent Jill Gutbier. “So I think that message at least is getting around kids know they need to go and report anything like that. So I'm grateful for that."

The teen was taken to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center in Fort Worth where he'll likely be released back to his parents.
