City of Rowlett under 24 hour curfew following tornado

The EF-3 tornado that tore through Rowlett left a 4 mile path of destruction and was nearly 3/4 of a mile wide.

Nearly 450 homes sustained some level of damage, but so far city officials have not reported any deaths within the city limits.

City manager Brian Funderburk said 22 homes suffered major structural damage, with 39 homes destroyed.

"There will be more," Funderburk said.

FOX4 News arrived just minutes after the tornado passed, and captured the caring and helpful spirit of this community, where neighbors like John Huffman and dozens of others just came out to help.

"When I first got there there were a set of legs setting out of the front door," Huffman says. "And they were talking with the people that were inside and that they were okay, but said they had gotten into the hall closet, and seconds later the house just fell down on top of them."

While everyone is believed to be accounted for, search and rescue efforts continue. Structural engineers will continue assessing the damaged or destroyed homes.

Residents in Rowlett remained under a 24 hour curfew as of Sunday night.
