Children may have played with rabid bat in Lewisville

Denton County authorities are searching for children who may have had contact with a rabid bat in Lewisville.

Five young children were spotted playing with the bat at the Lake Park Ballfields in Lewisville last Saturday between 10 and 11 a.m. That bat tested positive for rabies and the children may need treatment.

The children left the park before animal services could arrive.

A second bat found in a Lewisville neighborhood on Thursday morning is also being tested for rabies. The house is located relatively close to the park where the rabid bat was found.

A homeowner found the seemingly dead bat and called animal control. When officials arrived and began removing the bat, it started to move. Officials said they have no reason to believe the second bat had rabies, but are testing it as a precaution.
