Child safe after Dallas carjacking attempt

A 7-year-old child is safe after a carjacking attempt in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas on Monday morning.

Police said a woman pulled up to the Kids Corner Day Care Center on Polk Street near Highway 67 around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Crystal, who asked that FOX4 not use her last name, was dropping off her son when a man took off in her running Nissan Altima with her 7-year-old daughter sitting in the back seat.

Crystal said she grabbed onto the driver’s side door of her car as it was moving. She said she fell on the ground, got back up and jumped on the trunk of the car. As it drove down the street, she was yelling at the suspect that her daughter was inside. That’s when her 7-year-old child was able to jump out.

Crystal stayed on the car until the suspect pulled over into a nearby parking lot.

"We started scuffling,” she said. “He punched me in my face a few times. I got a bad scrape on my side."

Crystal said the thief demanded her cash and ran off. She snapped a photo of her daughter, Paiden, being taken into Children's Medical Center on a stretcher.

“Don't mess with my cubs,” she said. “One thing you don't mess with is my babies.”

The owner of the daycare center didn't want to talk about the incident.

“Parents, please do not leave your kids in the car with the keys or without the keys,” said the owner’s sister, Dian Brown.

Crystal said she agrees.

“I have definitely learned my lesson,” she said. “Do not leave the keys in the car.”

Paiden was bruised up on her knees from the incident but is expected to be ok.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance cameras from the parking lot in hopes of identifying the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Dallas Police Department.
