A man was taken into custody Thursday morning following a standoff at a burning home.

Video from SKY 4 showed SWAT officers leading the man away from the smoke and flames in the 300 block of Haltom Road in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth police said officers had been chasing a suspect who was wanted for stealing a car out of Haltom City. A couple came outside and told police the man they were looking for was not in the house but another man was and he had a gun.

Minutes later, police say the house started burning, shots were fired and a man came out running.

“Officers on the scene couldn't determine if the shots were fired at them or just being fired at random,” explained Fort Worth Police Sgt. Mark Povero.

Police say they can't be sure who fired the shots or set the house on fire. The man who ran from the house was caught in a field across the street after he was shot by a non-lethal 40mm foam round.

“The round that struck him did not necessarily cause an injury to him, but he was sick,” Povero explained.

The man was taken to the hospital where police say he was being detained. Police were then told someone with a gun was still inside the burning home. Although that turned out to be false, it changed how police tackled the threat of the fire.

“The decision was made to bring in Fort Worth firefighters wearing ballistic vests accompanied by our SWAT team to knock down the flames to a point where it wouldn't endanger citizens who live nearby,” Povero said.

It's unusual to hear about firefighters wearing ballistics vests, but every Fort Worth firefighter has one and train with police for critical incidents like this one.

"This the first time in recent memory that we've had the fire department begin fire suppression as a task force with the Fort Worth police Swat Team,” said Kyle Falkner with the Fort Worth Fire Department.

It’s not yet clear if the fire was intentional or accidental. Flames eventually consumed the house and smoke covered the area.

Police have not yet said whether the man who was taken into custody is the suspect they were looking for.
