Cannabis convention coming to Fort Worth this weekend

A cannabis convention will take center stage in Fort Worth this weekend. Thousands are expected to attend, including some big name medical marijuana advocates.

Event organizers admit, Fort Worth isn't the first place you'd think to hold the Southwest Cannabis Conference and Expo, but say they've had a warm welcome.

The event runs Saturday and Sunday at the Fort Worth Convention Center. 235 vendors will cater to an estimated six-thousand people.

Organizers say the event is about more than just the plant, and the majority of vendors are there to educate people on the medical marijuana industry and the effort to shape Texas law to accommodate it. "They're getting to learn about the Cannabinoid system they'll learn about appropriate delivery systems they're getting to learn true education about legislation and advocacy and the rest of it," said co-founder Patrick Moran.

The face of the issue may well be 10-year-old Alexis Bartell. Her father says she has Intractable Epilepsy and takes THC and cannabis oil to control it. Her family used to live in Rowlett, but moved to Colorado last year because of Texas' restrictive medical marijuana laws.

Her father says she has been seizure free for 344 days. We couldn't speak to Alexis, who is still at home. She will fly in briefly to speak Sunday, but will fly back out right after because she must take her medication once every 12 hours. If her parents brought the medication to Texas, they would be arrested.
