Brawl ends Mesquite Christmas celebration early

The City of Mesquite defended how it handled a fight that ended a Christmas celebration on Saturday night.

A fight between a group of teens broke out at the annual Christmas in the Park event. The brawl forced police to end the event early to get people out safely.

During Monday’s council meeting, the mayor said the parade will go on. He said for him, it's personal.

“My father was on the parks board 29 years ago when this event began in Mesquite,” Mayor Stan Pickett said. “We want to have this as one of the greatest events in this entire area.”

There were no arrests made, and no injuries from the fight on Saturday. Last year there were also reports of gunfire which also caused a disturbance.

The city said it will continue to make improvements to security.
