Betty Wright, wife of former US House speaker, dies at 91

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Betty Wright, the wife of former U.S. House speaker Jim Wright, has died just two months after the death of her husband. She was 91.

Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home in Fort Worth confirmed her death. Wright died Wednesday and funeral services are scheduled for Sunday. She will be buried next to her husband in Weatherford.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Wright was known to be reserved but also protective and fiercely dedicated to her husband. The couple was married for 43 years.

Jim Wright died May 6 at age 92. The longtime Texas Democrat was often praised for his eloquence and oratorical skills.

He became speaker in 1987 but was forced from office two years later after a House ethics panel charged Wright with violations that included improperly accepting gifts.
