ATM thieves elude police in West Dallas

Police put a west Dallas neighborhood on lockdown for a short time as they searched for ATM thieves early Wednesday morning.

The robbery happened around 2:30 a.m. at the Exxon gas station in the 2000 block of Fort Worth Avenue.

The clerk at a nearby store told police he saw three men wearing masks break in and load the ATM into the back of a black pickup.

A short time later police got a call from someone who saw a group of men banging on something in a field off Muncie Avenue.

Police searched the area with helicopters and dogs. Officers found the black pickup and the unopened ATM, but the suspects got away.
