Armed robber found dead hours after being shot in DeSoto

DeSoto PD is investigating a man's claim that he fatally shot an armed robber — but didn’t know it until the next day.

A homeowner called police Tuesday morning after finding a body in a DeSoto neighborhood.

Police had investigated a report of gunshots there late Monday night, but they did not find anything. Then, the would-be robbery victim came forward.

Police spent almost the whole day processing the scene and collecting evidence. They now believe it was an attempted robbery that ended in gunshots and a dead robber.

Evidence markers show where DeSoto PD found traces of blood and shell casings in the 1000 block of Oak Meadow Lane Tuesday.

“A little after midnight, DeSoto Police, our patrol units received some calls for shots fired here on Oak Meadow,” said DeSoto Police PIO Pete Schulte. “They responded. Didn’t find anything.”

It wasn’t until Tuesday morning around 9:30 when police realized someone had been shot. Someone opened their garage door and saw a man face down in their driveway with at least two gunshot wounds.

DeSoto Police say after the body being found was reported on the news, a man called police saying he was driving in the area around midnight when a 29-year-old man, who was later found dead, pointed a gun at him and tried to rob him. That driver told police that he shot at the man in self-defense and did not realize that he had actually shot him as the man ran away to the driveway.

“It looks like whatever the gunshots were to his body, he succumbed to them and fell over and died,” Schulte said.

Police are not identifying either of the men involved at this time. They say the case will be referred to the DA’s office for a grand jury to decide.
