Arlington, UTA police train for active shooter at sporting event

Emergency crews took over part of the University of Texas-Arlington campus Monday as part of large-scale active shooter drill.

But instead of crews practicing maneuvering through halls or dealing with a barricaded suspect in a classroom, the scenario was if something happened at a big sporting event.

The drill played out inside College Park Center on the same floor where UTA teams and the WNBA’s Dallas Wings play. Actors were fanned out through the stadium as fans.

As members of UTA Police, Arlington Police and Fire entered, they had evaluators closely following behind so they could give advice as soon as they were done.

The departments all work together a lot, but not often at that scale.

“This just gives us another opportunity to build those relationships and to show and enhance the way that we work together,” said Capt. Mike McCord, UTA Police.
