Allen turns HS football loss into community win

The City of Allen is turning Friday's loss to Austin Westlake in Waco into a win for the community.

It started with a call for people to donate $57 to Allen Community Outreach in honor of the team's historic 57-game winning streak.

Friday’s loss in Waco was devastating, ending the team's chance at a fourth championship in a row.

“Some teachers who work here have never experienced a loss,” said Allen ISD algebra teacher Michelle Sigle. “Many of the players have never experienced a loss on the varsity team. It's pretty profound."

The next day, Sigle had an idea, posting a message on Facebook saying, "I’m donating $57 to ACO in honor of the Allen Eagles and their magnificent runas a symbol of the community spirit that Allen embodies each week."

“It's just spread like wildfire,” said Sigle.

Since the idea was posted, more than $4,000 in donations have come in. The toys that have been donated and the Allen Community Outreach help families who are in crisis situations.

“I hope we spread our $57s all over Allen and that it grows,” said Sigle.

Allen Community Outreach also provides food and clothes for families, and emergency rent assistance.

The donations so far also equal enough money to keep 15 families in their homes for Christmas.
