Abbott strikes against Valdez immediately after Democratic primary win

Gov. Greg Abbott is already on the attack less than 24 hours after Lupe Valdez became the Democratic nominee for governor.

Almost immediately after the election results came in, Abbott's campaign released an online video claiming that Valdez has flip flopped on whether or not she would raise taxes if elected governor. It also claimed she is unfamiliar with state issues.

Valdez said the video is a mischaracterization and indicated she would be open to raising taxes only on the wealthy.

“I will never put a heavy load on the everyday Texan. I am not for an income tax I will never vote for an income tax. If it affects the working Texan I am not for it,” Valdez said.

Texas hasn't had a Democratic governor since the early 1990s and it has never had a Latina or gay governor, but Valdez said beating the odds is what she does best. In 2004, Valdez was the first Latina female to be elected sheriff in Texas.

Abbott has a $41 million war chest for the campaign, but Valdez believes she will be able to raise enough to be competitive.

In a statement, Abbott's campaign spokesman said while Valdez "continues in her struggle to give definitive answers.... Governor Abbott will be crisscrossing the state articulating his message of economic freedom and individual liberty.”
