One dead after shooting at Dallas truck stop

One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting that happened Monday at a Dallas truck stop.

The shooting occurred on the edge of the Flying J Truck Stop near I-20 and Bonnie View Road at about 2 p.m.

Dallas police said an off-duty DPD officer was working at the truck stop when there were reports of gunfire at Riverside and Bonnie View, not far from the truck stop.

The officer responded to that report and saw a person running toward him on Bonnie View. The officer told the person to stop. The person complied and was detained by the officer.

After that, a black truck came at a high rate of speed directly at the officer, according to police. The officer feared for his life so he fired his weapon several times at the truck and driver.

The driver, 45-year-old Desmond Luster, was later pronounced dead at Baylor Medical Center.

Luster's father, Herman, believes a burglar or burglars may had just broken into Luster's home at the time of the incident -- Luster's family said he had been burglarized twice in the past two weeks.

"Only thing we know is that someone was burglarizing their home," Luster's father, Herman, told FOX 4 Monday night.

Police have not confirmed whether the initial call about shots being fired involved Luster.

DPD says they do have one person in custody, and that person is likely related to the case.
