Arlington residents to vote on red light cameras in May

Arlington residents will vote in May on removing red light cameras in their city.

City council voted Tuesday night to put the issue on the ballot after a petition drive showed overwhelming dislike of the cameras.

Opponents of the red light cameras gathered more than 11,000 signatures, which is 2,000 more than they needed. That brought the cameras to a council vote on a city charter amendment election in May to keep or pull the cameras.

Arlington has installed 19 cameras since the program was approved in 2007.

Supporters say they improve safety and reduce accidents.

Tuesday night's vote was just a first reading -- the second and final vote on holding the May election will come in two weeks.
