Family members said 74-year-old James Humphrey Jr. had trouble getting around on his own. He didn't make it out when his home on Spring Avenue caught fire late Monday night.
"I went over to check on him to make sure he was okay before I went to go get my meds and he told me he was fine," said Alfreda Johnson, the victim's cousin and caretaker.
But when Johnson returned all she saw were flames.
"I jumped out of the car and they wouldn't let me in the house. The house was ablaze and on fire," she said. "He was a good elderly old man and he didn't deserve to be burned up in flames. He didn't deserve to lose his life like that."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters believe there was an electrical problem with a new smart meter.
