Fundraiser to help longtime Dallas police officer with cancer

Dallas police are rallying around one of their own as she battles breast cancer.

Senior Corporal LaCrondia Ellis, a 25-year-veteran of the department, was dealt a blow in November that changed her life.

“It was just a normal day,” Ellis said. “I was getting ready for work and my hand just went right to the spot and I felt it.”

The single mom who also cares for her ailing mother was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, spreading to her lymph nodes.

“I started thinking about my mom and my daughter and that's when the tears started. I started thinking about them and what am I going to do now,” Ellis said.

Ellis took her mother in five years ago, caring for her through kidney failure. Now she juggles her own chemo and her mother's dialysis.

The Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation saw her struggle and stepped in.

“When an officer is down due to an illness or injury and you have this police law enforcement family that shows up, it means a lot to those families,” said Sgt. Demetrick Pennie, Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation.

On Thursday, three Schlotzky's locations in Dallas and Plano will donate a part of sales to customers mentioning the foundation.
