Small plane hits Lubbock TV station tower; 1 dead

A small plane hit a television station's transmitter tower Wednesday night in Lubbock, causing power outages at the station and nearby businesses and homes, and Lubbock police say one person, likely the pilot, died.

The FOX News affiliate in Lubbock says the plane landed north of the building in a field, and the tower at KCBD TV Was sheared in half. The TV station was evacuated for fear the entire tower might fall.

Federal Aviation Administration officials say the single-engine Piper PA-46 dropped off the radar about 7:30 p.m. as it was approaching the airport in Lubbock.
According to FlightAware, it took off from Carlsbad, New Mexico.

It is not known how many people were on the plane.
