Ft. Worth police arrest man accused of soliciting kids for sex

A man whom police say propositioned three kids for sex is well known within the Fort Worth arts community.

Police say their child predator suspect is 33-year-old Declois Garrett Beacham, but there is a lot of shock and confusion -- that the same man, going by a different name, is the artistic director for the Jubilee Theatre in downtown Fort Worth.

Beacham is charged with compelling prostitution.

"We learned of an additional victim yesterday," said Det. Chris Daniels with the Fort Worth Police Department.

Police say Beacham sexually propositioned an 11-year-old boy and then paid him $100. Beacham is also accused of trying to solicit two more teen boys.

Originally, the 11-year-old told police that Beacham had sexually assaulted him. However, the boy later recanted his statement, saying that Beacham instead tried to assault him, but he fought Beacham off and ran away with $100 Beacham had given him.

Detectives say Beacham was picked out of a photo lineup by all three of his alleged victims.

"Once we were able to identify a suspect and confirm that identity to the victims, it was at that point that we went ahead and started conducting surveillance," said Daniels.

But at the Jubilee Theatre, Beacham is known as Tre Garrett.

He's been the theatre's artistic director for the past five years.

On his website, he posted pictures of himself posed with a number of celebrities including Colin Powell, James Earl Jones and Russell Simmons.

The theatre board released a statement following Beacham's arrest, saying in part, "We have known Tre for 5 years, and have not seen any indication he would participate in the kind of behavior he is accused of."

But the managing director of the theatre would not answer what Beacham's involvement or exposure to kids has been at the theatre.

In the arrest warrant affidavit, Beacham told detectives something that drew a sharp response from Fort Worth ISD.

"Beacham stated that he often visits the area of 5400 E. Rosedale Street because he is a member of the Young Men's Leadership Academy schoolboard," the affidavit says.

Fort Worth ISD said Friday that school has no school board, and the only time Beacham has been to that campus was during a play put on at the school by the Jubilee Theatre.

A spokesperson for the district says at no time did Beacham have any contact with kids.

FOX 4 went to Beacham's Fort Worth home Friday to ask him about the allegations. No one answered.

In the arrest warrant affidavit, Beacham denied the accusations to detectives.

His attorney told FOX 4 late Friday evening that "he maintains his innocence."
