Family members suspect hypothermia killed Ft. Worth mom, child

Family members believe hypothermia is to blame in the mysterious deaths of a Fort Worth woman and her 13-month-old daughter.

The bodies of 27-year-old Lindsay Gardner and her young daughter, Hailey, were found not far from their crashed car Tuesday afternoon.

Police say neither one was wearing clothes, nor did they show signs of trauma.

Family and friends gathered Friday night in Fort Worth to remember the mother and daughter.

"The medical examiner, he is opined that it could really be something as off the wall as hypothermia," said Lindsay's uncle, Ewin Grace.

Grace says it's likely his niece was stranded, injured and stuck in her wrecked car all night long.

He says she sent a text to her parents Monday night saying that she was headed over to their house, but she never showed up.

Lindsay's car was found smashed into a tree Tuesday morning near the edge of a field at Altamesa Boulevard and Bryant Irving Road.

Lindsay's body was found about 500 feet away, naked and lying on top of Hailey, who was also unclothed.

The low Monday night was just below freezing, and the airbags in the car had deployed.

"A nurse called me today saying that they've run into cases where someone gets so into hypothermia, they get distraught and they can't figure out what they're doing," said Grace. "They begin to take their clothes off because it feels like they're burning rather than freezing."

But the bizarre circumstances surrounding the death of Lindsay and Hailey were put aside during Friday's vigil as the two were remembered by a mom's group Lindsay was a part of.

"We're just really gonna miss her presence in the group," said Jennifer Spencer with DFW Crunchy Moms. "A lot of us are…many women in the group are really grieving for her."

The group recalled how encouraging Lindsay was, always telling them to look on the bright side.

Then Lindsay's husband, Anthony Gardner, spoke.

"I just loved them very much," he said. "They were the best thing that ever happened to me."

Fort Worth police say they do not suspect foul play, so it will be up to the medical examiner to determine the cause of the deaths.

Lindsay taught preschool at Travis Avenue Baptist Church, where a mural she painted is in the hallway of the children's ministry wing -- a tribute to her artistic talent and love of painting.
