How to help North Texas storm victims

- North Texans are stepping up to help the survivors of the deadly storms.

So many people have already donated items that the city of Garland couldn’t accept any more at its drop-off locations. Instead, the city created a clearing house for volunteers. Anyone who wants to help can register at garlandtx.recovers.org.

In Rockwall, the Cornerstone Assembly of God Church canceled Sunday services to help collect donations. The First Rowlett United Methodist Church was also set up as a collection center.

The victims in Blue Ridge do not expect to receive any federal aid. That's why One Cause Church in McKinney is collecting donations for them. Specifically, they are asking people to drop off clothes, gift cards, plastic totes, personal hygiene items or monetary donations at the church Saturday between 2 and 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, many businesses are stepping up to help. 24 Hour Fitness in Rockwall opened its doors to tornado victims and Pepsi-Co delivered a truckload of water to a shelter. American Airlines pledged $100,000 to the local American Red Cross chapter.

On Wednesday, Raising Canes held a fundraising event for the victims, with 106.1 KISS FM broadcasting live and collecting gift cards for the victims.

The Red Cross is helping residents in Ellis, Dallas, Collin, and other counties. People impacted by the storms in those areas are welcome to use the Red Cross shelters listed below. Workers will also be distributing supplies like tarps, shovels, trash bags and work gloves.

Anyone interested in volunteering, you can sign up at redcross.org/volunteer. Monetary donations can be made by visiting redcross.org/donate or texting RED CROSS to 90999.

The Salvation Army is providing services like meals, cleanup kits, clothing vouchers and financial assistance to victims in multiple areas affected by the tornadoes.. Volunteers can help by going to salvationarmydfw.org.
