SMU is the latest private university in Texas to declare it will remain gun-free.
University president R. Gerald Turner made the announcement Friday to maintain the school's longstanding weapons ban.
The announcement comes ahead of the state law due to go into effect next August that allows people with a CHL to carry guns on campus.
The bill lets private colleges and universities retain the power to completely ban guns on campus, but the schools are required to get student insight first.
SMU students have mixed reactions about the ban.
TCU and Baylor also opted out of campus carry.
