Corps: Lewisville Lake dam will hold for now

- The Army Corps of Engineers says there are some safety issues, but the Lewisville Lake dam is not at any immediate risk of failing.

A story that was published in the Dallas Morning News over the weekend quoted a Corps report that said the earthen dam is almost certain to fail under normal operations within a few years unless immediate steps are taken.

If the dam were to fail, that could put downstream communities including Lewisville and Dallas at risk for severe flooding.

But, the cities of Lewisville and Carrollton are joining with the Corps in saying that the dam is safe for now.

Next month work will begin on a $6.4 million project to repair a section that was damaged during the heavy rain during the spring. Other short term and long term fixes are in the works.

The Corps has scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Wednesday to release more details about the fixes.
