Some Dallas parents are fed up with their kids staying inside school most of the day and are calling on DISD to make recess mandatory at elementary schools.
The parents and some experts say free time on a playground is as important as math class for kids and should not be taken away.
Most Dallas ISD schools have some form of recess, but some parents said their school's 20 minute recess is too short and it can be taken away for punishment.
A petition has more than 600 signatures asking the DISD board to make recess mandatory. The board discussed the idea brought forth by trustee Dan Micciche at its Thursday meeting and trustees seemed open to the idea, but some had questions.
Trustee Miguel Solis said he supports requiring recess.
"I experienced recess and it did a lot for me, raised my ego because I was the king of tag,” Solis said.
Trustee Lew Blackburn didn't want to take away a teacher's ability to keep a kid who makes threats or throws things off the playground.
"If we allow a child who has done that in the classroom to go outside, unstructured activity, that behavior could continue,” Blackburn said.
The trustees agreed to take the issue up again in January.
