An 80-year-old Fort Worth woman broke a window to escape a fire in her home and then tried to break back in to save her husband.

The family identified the couple as Lula and James Johnson. The woman was injured as she was breaking another window to reach her husband on Thursday morning. Firefighters showed up a few minutes later.

Firefighters said the husband, 79, was in cardiac arrest when he was taken out of the house. The fire department said he suffered from smoke inhalation.

Both were rushed to the hospital.

"My mom is a warrior she is, she is strong and she is good,” said daughter Joyce Smith.

Relatives said the couple celebrated Thanksgiving dinner last week with relatives who came into town, so they were alone in the house.

Firefighters said the fire seems to have started in front part of the house, but the cause is still under investigation.
