KELLER, Texas - UPDATE: Keller police have made an arrest and recovered the rings. They will be returned to the coach.
A man from the Fort Worth suburb of Keller hopes his championship football rings will be returned. They were taken by a man he stopped to help.
Surveillance video shows a man asking for money at a QuikTrip. Roger Benefield handed some over and went inside, forgetting to lock his door because of the distraction.
The man then opened Benefield’s passenger side door and stole six football rings from his center console.
Bennefield was an offensive lineman on the 1974 Baylor championship and coached Grapevine High School toward two state titles in the 1990s. He’s currently a football coach at Keller High School.
“I can get replacements, but they’re not the ones they gave me when it happened. And that’s why they’re so important to me. It’s my story and I want my story back,” he said.
Police think the thief later went to another gas station. Video shows him drop the rings into a woman’s back pocket. They have a short conversation and then leave.
Benefield said he usually only takes the rings out on special occasions. They were in his truck because he wore them as a special guest over the weekend at the Baylor-OU football game.
Fort Worth police are investigating the case.
