New movie based on Dallas writer's book

"My All-American" opened in movie theaters across the country last week, based on a best-selling book by a Texas sports writer who won't be seeing it because he is serving prison time.

“My All-American” is based on Jim Dent's book, “Courage Beyond the Game.”

Dent authored 14 books, including three New York Times bestsellers, while he accumulated 10 drunken driving convictions in four states.

Dent is now serving time at the state jail in Jacksboro. He talked with FOX 4's Richard Ray about writing a new chapter for the rest of his life.

“I'm an addict, no question,” said Dent. “I have a problem with alcohol, but that's behind me. I have a past that is shameful. But that's behind me."

"If you were pitching this as a movie, what's the short pitch on the Jim Dent story?" said Ray.

"It's about a wild and wooly kind of guy who also wrote books, who was able to be the most dysfunctional workaholic in the history of mankind,” said Dent.

Dent is now helping teach other inmates, and he says he is seeking a deeper Christian faith.

Dent could be out of prison early in 2020. He will then be 66 years old.

"I'm writing my life story,” said Dent. “It's called 'Last Call,’ and it's all about how Jim Dent is going to live his life better and be a better citizen when he gets out.”
