Uber driver who allegedly raped woman had fraudulent city permit

The City of Dallas is investigating how an Uber driver arrested for rape appears to have been able to use an expired permit to work.

Dallas City Hall said Talal Ali Chammout, 56, of Plano allegedly changed the information on an expired permit.

Police said last month he picked up a woman, drove her to her home on Colorado Boulevard in west Oak Cliff and sexually assaulted her inside her home.

“The number that is on the permit, it does belong to someone else,” said city spokeswoman Sana Syed. “That permit was issued back in 2008, permits are issued for two years. It expired in 2010 and was not renewed."

The city says the permit was assigned to another Uber driver but isn't sure how Chammout got that number.

Uber says Chammout was not authorized to drive for the company and it is investigating.
