A kindergartner was with family from Johnson County when he was mauled by dogs and killed at a friend’s home near Beaumont recently.
The victim, Tanner Smith, would have turned 6 on Tuesday.
Tanner's family says he was playing in the backyard of the friend’s home in southeast Texas on Sunday evening when the friend's two pit bulls attacked.
The boy's mother thought a friend's father was watching her son, and did not realize he was unsupervised until it was too late.
The boy had 16 bite marks and died at the hospital.
His family says he had previously survived life-threatening health issues, including, three open heart surgeries.
The pit bull's owner put the dogs down himself.
