Dallas police are still looking for the man who knocked over a woman while stealing her wallet, and it was all caught on camera.
The woman was shopping at an Oak Cliff Walgreens on Fort Worth Avenue late last month when another customer grabbed her wallet, fought her for it, and took off.
In the video, the man is clearly focused on the woman at the register making a purchase. The woman has her wallet in her hand and her purse is in her shopping cart.
"When I was standing there, when I was facing the register, I could feel something coming around me and I realized that this was abnormal,” said the woman, Alice Zacarello. “And so I realized pretty quickly that somebody was after my wallet. "
With several bystanders choosing to get involved, the suspect shockingly grabbed her wallet, dragging Alice Zacarello to the floor as she tried to hold onto it.
"I was also trying to grab for his feet, so that I could possibly trip him and make him fall, but that didn't happen and he ran out,” said Zacarello. “I jumped up, I ran out after him.”
More than a week after the ordeal, 64-year-old Zacarello, director of a faith-based nonprofit, is still reeling from what happened.
She says the thief got away with cash, credit cards, which she immediately canceled, and her driver’s license.
She wasn’t seriously injured, but bruised her knees when she fell.
In the meantime, she wants the suspect behind bars and hopes that what happened to her will serve as a wake-up call to many.
“I was thinking, ‘This isn't really happening,’” said Zacarello. “You think this happens to other people, but it can happen to you too. It happened to me. I’ve never had anything like that happened to me before, ever.”
Police are still investigating.
Zacarello says she isn’t upset that witnesses in the store at the time didn’t get involved.
Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to contact Det. Cleary of the Southwest Investigative Unit at 214-670-7471.
