Aledo mourns death of ex-superintendent in I-20 wreck

Families in Aledo are mourning the loss of a former school superintendent.

Don Daniel was killed Wednesday in a head on crash on I-20. Texas Department of Public Safety officials said Daniel's pickup crossed into the eastbound lanes and into oncoming traffic.

Support for the family is visible everywhere around town and on social media.

"It was never about Don Daniel it was always about making sure the kids were successful," said Derek Citty, Aledo ISD superintendent.

Don Daniel was the district's superintendent for 12 years before he retired in 2011. Daniel came at a time when Aledo was transitioning from a rural community and worked to ensure the district and its students kept pace.

Before Daniels left the school board put his name on the new 9th grade school.

Hunter Corzine, 14, died with his grandfather in the wreck. In the new school year Corzine was moving from 8th grade to the new 9th grade campus.

"His grandchildren were the joy of his life. Saw in one message he was always at his grandson's baseball games and football games. He just loved and adored his family," said Randy Keck, Aledo Community News publisher.

Rico Remigio came to one of the schools to lay down flowers on Thursday. His daughter and Hunter Corzine were classmates.

"He was very nice, very nice respectable young man. Very, very likeable. Very popular," Remigio said.

A cause of the wreck has not been determined by investigators.
