Driver gets 70 years for killing 13-year-old in hit-and-run

A man who killed a 13-year-old police officer's son in a hit-and-run crash was sentenced Wednesday to 70 years in prison.

Dagoberto Castanon received 60 years for murder and two five-year sentences for failing to stop and render aid.

Ethan Vasquez died in April of 2014 after Castanon slammed into the car he was riding in with his mother.

Police said Castanon was in a stolen minivan and trying to get away from Highland Park police officers. He took off on foot after the crash.

In court Wednesday, Ethan's family members talked about missing him. His  mother Sandy Vasquez said "our house is lifeless and dark now."

"You've stolen the sun out of my sky, and for that you will never be forgiven," she said.

She said the case has taught her an ultimate lesson about how unfair life is.

Castanon apologized to the family when he took the stand in his defense.
