Suspect in custody after Anna golf course shooting

A 20-year-old is accused of shooting and killing his co-worker early Wednesday.

- A 20-year-old man is charged with shooting and killing his co-worker at a golf course in Collin County.

Captain Jim Moody with the Collin County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting happened around 9:40 a.m. Wednesday near the ninth hole at the Hurricane Creek Country Club near Anna.

Police say John Robert Sim worked at the golf course and killed his co-worker after a conflict. Sources identified the slain coworker as 55-year-old Julio Garcia. They said Sim shot Garcia in the head with a shotgun.

SKY4 was overhead when investigators searched a utility shed with golf carts and leaf blowers.

Rick O'Neal lives near the golf course.

“I looked outside and saw a guy coming over my fence into my property,” he said.

O'Neal says Sim was soaking wet, wearing jeans and a hoodie.

“I ask him a couple of times, ‘Do you need something? What was happening?’ He was kind of evasive,” he recalled. “He just said he was lost, and he needed to find Anna. And I asked him why he was so wet, and he didn't say anything.”

O’Neal says Sim walked away down the street. But it wasn't long before police, who'd been searching for the shooter, caught up to him.

“I was just about to call 911 when a constable came by,” O’Neal said. “And I stopped the constable, and I said, ‘You need to talk to this guy going down the road. Something is not right.’ And that was it.”

As for a motive, police either don't know or aren't tipping their hand.

“This is still a very active and ongoing investigation, so I can't really speak to that at this point,” Moody said.

Sim has had several arrests out of Collin County, including one for theft. His bond is set at $500,000.
