Food bank hopes to give turkeys to all those hungry in Fort Worth

- A Fort Worth food bank is expecting to hand out thousands of Thanksgiving meals to those in need.

Several dozen people were in line outside the Community Food Bank despite the cold Monday morning. Some arrived as early as 5 a.m.

Every year the line seems to get longer and people arrive earlier. The Community Food Bank said that just shows how great the need is.

The food bank expects to help more than 4,000 families this year and hopes it will not have to turn anyone away. This year it is seeing a lot of senior citizens on fixed incomes that are caring for young children.

“I thank the good Lord for the food here to help all the people here. It will be a good Thanksgiving for me and my family and probably many more families,” said Daisy Sauls, who was waiting in line Monday morning.

People with vouchers can pick up their turkeys Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Those who don’t have a voucher can get a turkey on a first-come, first-serve basis starting Wednesday at 9 p.m.

The Community Food Bank said its mission is to fight hunger. It will continue handing out turkeys until they are all gone.

The public can help keep the driving going longer by dropping off additional turkeys or donating just $13 online. For more information, visit www.food-bank.org.
