UT Arlington student dies after being hit by vehicle

- The UT Arlington community is mourning the loss of a student who was hit-and-killed by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon.

Police say a vehicle was turning onto North Cooper Street and hit a pedestrian in the roadway. University officials identified the pedestrian as a 27-year-old student, Eneyda Lisette Sorto.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. Sorto was rushed to a hospital and later died.

“Every student contributes in no small measure to the community we create here at the School of Social Work and at UTA. The loss of any student, particularly in such a tragic way, deeply hurts us all,” the university said in a statement. “On behalf of the faculty and staff, please join me in expressing our deepest sympathies to everyone who loved Lisette and everyone she loved.”

Arlington police say the driver did stop to help. They do not plan to file charges, but the investigation is ongoing.
