16-year-old Fort Worth student shot and killed

- Fort Worth police are trying to figure out how a group of teens got a gun that ended up going off and killing one of them.

Police say someone called 911 around 9 p.m. Thursday to report that shots were fired in the 3700 block of Elm Street.

Responding officers learned that 16-year-old Jose Alvarez had already been taken to the hospital. By the time they got to the hospital too, he had passed away.

Investigators say a group of teens were inside a car on Elm Street when they were waiting for someone to come outside of a house.

Police say there was a handgun in the vehicle, and at least one of the teens did not know the weapon was loaded. They say it is unclear what transpired, but Alvarez was shot in the midsection of his body.

Family members described the high school sophomore as outgoing and always full of joy. He worked a part-time job at a nearby grocery store. His supervisor there is also in disbelief.

Police are still investigating the shooting. They say it’s unclear if this was an accident or a homicide. They are still looking for more witnesses to talk to.

Counselors were at the high school on Friday to help classmates cope with the sudden loss.
