Thousands celebrate Thanksgiving with Turkey Trot in Dallas

- Thousands of people were turkey trotting through Downtown Dallas on Thanksgiving morning.

More than 25,000 people signed up for the annual Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot. Another 40,000 people were estimated to be in the crowd cheering on their family and friends in the race.

Runners were able to choose from an 8-mile race, 5K run or 1K junior trot. Money raised during the event benefits the Dallas YMCA and stays in the community.

Many called the Turkey Trot a family tradition and a way to kick off their Thanksgiving. They got up to burn calories before eating a big turkey lunch with all the sides and then settling down to watch the Cowboys game.

While other cities have similar events each Thanksgiving Day, the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot is said to be one of the biggest in the country.

Of course, it did impact traffic in Downtown Dallas. Several streets were closed until noon.
