Bedford police are investigating the drowning of a two-year-old girl.

She was found in an apartment complex pool late Friday night. Police say the girl had been missing for two and a half hours when she was found. It happened at the Amherst apartment homes, where her family lives.

While officers were on the way there, someone found the child in the apartment pool. Officers and medics gave CPR and made other lifesaving efforts on the little girl, but it was no use. She was pronounced dead at Cook Children’s Hospital about an hour later.

"The first responders including medics respond to incidents everyday, but when there’s a child involved, it’s especially moving," said Bedford Police Lt. Mike Hager. "These officers and first responders have families, and it brings home what this is really all about."

People who live at the complex say it would be impossible for a child to get through the pool gate on their own because of the high latch.

Police say there was no lifeguard on duty at the pool and no one else was their either.
