Fewer Joe Pool Lake visitors expected due to flooding

Joe Pool Lake in southwest Dallas County is 8-and-a-half feet above normal and still rising.

A sign there says "Swim at your own risk." Normally, that sign is on the shore; now, it's almost underwater.

State park officers say the lake rose four feet on Sunday, closing two boat ramps, and the forecast says even more rain is coming.

Park rangers estimate that Cedar Hill State Park saw up to 10,000 visitors on Memorial Day weekend last year. With all the closures, there could be only 20 percent of that this year.

"It would have been customers way out the door, but right now it's way too flooded out here," said employee Robert Martinez. "There's nowhere to fish."

Last year, the park was fully staffed to handle crowds.

With less people this weekend, some employees will actually get part of the weekend off.

Last year, the Army Corps of Engineers says there were six fatalities at area lakes around Memorial Day weekend.

Closures this year mean things will be safer, perhaps resulting in fewer accidents.
