Fort Worth officer arrested after DWI crash

- An off-duty Fort Worth police officer was arrested early Wednesday for allegedly causing a serious accident.

The crash happened around 2 a.m. Wednesday in the TEXpress lanes of Highway 121 in Hurst. Captain Daniel Humphries was off duty at the time but driving a black Tahoe that is owned by the Fort Worth Police Department.

Hurst police said Humphries entered the roadway from the shoulder and hit a sedan. The driver of the sedan, 52-year-old Mark Holley, was trapped inside for almost an hour and had to be cut out of the vehicle.

Holley was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth and is recovering from a broken sternum and several broken bones in his hand.

Police suspect alcohol was involved in the crash. Humphries was arrested for intoxication assault.

Carroll Holley says he’s aware that an officer was found at fault but says he doesn’t harbor any hatred or anger.

"That's a little bit discouraging but police officers are people just like everybody else,” he said. “And you find bad apples everywhere."

The 45-year-old officer has been with the FWPD for 19 years. He was assigned as the commander of the traffic division, but police said he’ll be placed on restricted duty pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.

“The FWPD believes that citizens should expect our officers to adhere to the law and set an example for others to follow. When we fail, however, we also believe that our officers, as with any citizen accused of violating the law, deserves and should receive due process before judgements are made,” the department said in a statement.

Humphries is being held at the Euless jail. His bond has not yet been set. His attorney, Tim Choy, said he had to go to a higher court to get Humphries out of jail.

“It has something to do with the magistrate here,” Choy said. “For whatever reason, they haven't decided to set a bond. That's why we're having a district court judge do it.”
