Tempers flare at commissioners court

A discussion over diversity in hiring top executives at Parkland Hospital morphed into a heated exchange between Commissioner Mike Cantrell and John Wiley Price on Tuesday.

Price and Commissioner Elba Garcia questioned Parkland CEO Dr. Fred Cerise over what they see as lack of diversity and lack of effort in finding qualified minorities for executive positions at the county hospital.

Cerise defended the numbers, saying that since 2014, six of 13 vice presidents hired have been minorities -- nearly half.

Commissioner Mike Cantrell said he will not second guess who Cerise hires to run the mammoth medical facility.

The debate ended with Price asking Cerise for additional information on hires at parkland and evidence that those people were qualified to be in those positions.
