Arlington child dies after crashing into mailbox

- An Arlington boy was killed and another girl injured Tuesday night in an accident involving a motorized mini bike.

The boy, identified as 11-year-old Demarion Levi, lost control of the bike and crashed into a brick mailbox about 7:15 p.m. in the 500 block of McQueary Street. The impact was strong enough to knock the mailbox on its side. Levi was taken to the hospital where he later died.

People who were watching say Levi was doing fine until he faced making an evasive move to try to avoid the girl crossing the street and a parked car.

"He wound up hitting her as opposed to hitting the other car, flying off the motorcycle and hitting the mailbox. Carri was spun around on the ground,” said Shannon Mayfield, injured girl's mother.

La'Darius Jelks said his friend was riding the 110 cc dirt bike for the first time.

"I woke up hoping it was a dream but when I looked out my door it wasn't so I'm still in shock really,” Jelks said.

The girl who was hurt is home from the hospital with injuries to both knees and her left foot. She's expected to recover.

Arlington police say they're still investigating but they don't know who owns the dirt bike -- which is not street legal. Police say it's not likely the bike’s owner will face any charges.
