Frisco football recruit remains committed to Baylor despite recent scandal

A Baylor University football recruit says he is still ready to move to Waco and begin his college football career despite the school’s recent scandal.

Before Raleigh Texada committed to Baylor, then-Coach Art Briles sent him a signed poster for him to visualize his future at the school.

Now, the All-American Frisco Centennial cornerback is getting ready to leave for Waco on Monday to become a Baylor Bear in the midst of changing and trying times for the university.

"I know people were hurt. And I don't know much about the whole situation, but I'm just thankful Coach Briles gave me the opportunity to play at Baylor,” Raleigh said. “Me and him, we had a great relationship."

Raleigh spoke to his Baylor defensive back coach hours after the news broke that Briles was leaving. He's also talked to his fellow recruits.

"We're all shocked about Coach Briles because we, from my standpoint, I loved him,” explained Raleigh. “He showed love to me and my family really from the start."

Raleigh's dad, Ranthony, had full faith in Briles and still believes in the strength of the football program.

"There's a reason why Coach Briles took the Baylor program and elevated it,” said Ranthony. “It's because he has a great connection with kids.”

His oldest son, also named Ranthony, is a cornerback for TCU. They're a family that knows and has lived through the scrutiny these programs are under, and believe any issues should be confronted head on.

"The best thing to do is just to be honest, to communicate, to make sure you have good controls,” said Ranthony. “And I think when those controls are solid, they're to flush out what needs to happen."

Change is now inevitable at Baylor. Raleigh believes the football program will continue to succeed with the coaching staff that remains in place for now.

"They're still rolling down there,” he said. “They still have the coaching staff intact. It's a great place to be."
