Garland man injured by flying debris

A Garland man is in serious condition after hurt by flying debris during Tuesday's storms.

Moments after violent storms tore through an industrial area of Southwest Garland....Matthew Puckett says he saw a man leaving Garland roofing company in a white work van when a large piece of metal came out of no where.

"We had no idea that there could be high winds in the area. it was very sudden," Puckett said.

He says several people tried to help pull the man out but the metal's grip was too much.

Randy Shaft said, "I saw it knocked the van sideways and then the building landed on top of it."

Travis Hepler captured cell phone video of the man being rescued after crews worked for half an hour using the jaws of life and cutting out part of the seat to free him.

Firefighters say several power lines came down in the strong winds, heavy rain and flying debris.

For now the community is rallying around a man who friends say worked as a subcontractor for many years with Garland Roofing Company - like every other day just trying to do his job.

"That stuff came flying over the top of that building pretty quickly I don't think he had any reaction time hardly," Puckett said.
