Children's Hospital Heroes: Wynn

Thousands will show up in Plano this weekend to support a hospital that has saved the lives of so many North Texas kids.

One Dallas family has participated in the Children’s Heath Hospitals Red Balloon Run and Ride for several years and has raised more than $45,000. Doctors at Children’s saved 4-year-old Wynn Behnke’s life after he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He was just 14-months-old at the time.

“We went from he is sick and he is not eating, to he is critically ill,” said Jared Behnke, his father. “The doctors made it clear that if it had been another day or two it would have been life threatening.”

Wynn now gets 4 shots of insulin a day and his blood sugar level must be constantly monitored.

“Wynn deals with being Type 1 diabetic every day, but this is an event where for one day a year it is all about him and maybe there is something not so bad about being diabetic,” his father said.

The event is Saturday at the Children’s Plano campus. Participants can sign up that morning. Donations can also be made online.
