Austin police ID gunman killed after firing at helicopter

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Austin police have identified the 27-year-old gunman who was killed over the weekend after he repeatedly fired at a police helicopter.

Assistant Chief Brian Manley says police are still investigating a motive behind Sawyer Flache's actions. Police say officer Luke Serrato, a 3-year veteran of the department, shot Flache once, killing him early Sunday after Flache aimed a rifle at the helicopter.

Manley says Serrato has been placed on leave while an investigation continues, as is customary in fatal, officer-involved shootings.

Flache's family has released a statement, saying he was a loving father to two girls and will be greatly missed.

The helicopter was dispatched late Saturday night to investigate calls of someone shooting out streetlights. The aircraft has safely returned to its base.
