One of American's new Dreamliners damaged by hail

One of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliners operated by American Airlines has suffered hail damage after takeoff from Beijing.

Officials say the incident happened Monday as the jet was bound for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The plane, with 209 passengers, safely returned to Beijing where it was being checked out by a maintenance crew.

Fort Worth-based American has seven Dreamliners, which carry a list price of $224.6 million each after a recent 2.9 percent price hike. Airlines routinely get big discounts.

American put the planes into service in May in the U.S., then between DFW airport and Beijing and Buenos Aires in early June.

The fuselage and wings are made largely from carbon-fiber composite material instead of aluminum to reduce weight, making the plane more fuel-efficient.
